JM Marine Survey
Marine Surveyor Singapore

Jamie Morrison is Senior Marine Surveyor at JM Marine Surveys Singapore Pte Ltd, a Singapore-owned company specialising in yacht surveys. He is a member of the International Institute of Marine Surveying (IIMS).

Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia are very close to the Equator, with an unusual set of climatic conditions. Seawater temperatures, ultraviolet radiation and air humidity are all extremely high. This produces a special set of problems for boat owners in SE Asia – particularly when vessels have been designed and built for temperate climates. Typical marine survey findings on a luxury motor yacht in Equatorial Singapore, for example, are very different to those on a similar age powerboat in temperate Sydney.

For more information on this, see the Why Survey? page.

Commercial shipyards abound here, but yacht haul-out and repair facilities are few and far between. For catamarans and deep-draft racing boats, options are especially limited. Having carried out pre-purchase and damage inspections in many boatyards in the region, we’re familiar with the facilities they offer.  Please contact us if you’d like some guidance on suitability for a particular boat and purpose.

Singapore has a sizable fleet of charter yachts.  Locally-licensed pleasure craft undergo regular safety inspections by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). However, general vessel condition is not covered in detail by routine safety checks. A full pre-purchase/condition survey addresses many critical aspects that are significant to an owner or buyer.

Sailing yachts: the largest international brands are well-represented in Singapore and SE Asia.  Additionally, cruising boats of different sizes, materials and types pass through the area. We regularly carry out upper rig inspections on sailboats for insurance or pre-purchase purposes.

Multihulls are very popular in the Asia region (particularly powercats and sailing catamarans). Lightweight production cats offer many advantages over monohulls, including shallow draft, comfort at sea and plenty of space. But they are also vulnerable to lifting and chocking damage, and to overloading.

JMMS Singapore specialises in multihull inspections, with a particular focus on structural integrity.

Multihull brands we frequently inspect: Lagoon, Fountaine Pajot, Catana, Prout, Leopard, Aquila, Sunreef, Island Spirit, Outremer, Switch, St Francis and Seawind. We also survey carbon fibre racing multihulls.

Motor yacht and powerboats we regularly survey in this area include: Princess, Azimut, Monte Carlo (MCY), Fairline, Ferretti, Beneteau, Jeanneau, Cranchi, Riviera, Sunseeker, Meridian, Grand Banks, Chris-Craft, Robalo, Pursuit, Chaparral, Sea Ray, Bayliner and Four Winns - among others.

For marine insurers (insurance companies, agents and underwriters), we offer a damage and claims assessment service. This includes detailed structural surveys and upper rig inspections.  We regularly travel to Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong and other parts of SE Asia.
